About the festival
Music Mountain is the home of the oldest continuing summer chamber music festival in this country. Founded in 1930 as the permanent home for the Gordon String Quartet, one of the leading string quartets of its time, Music Mountain will celebrate its 86th anniversary season in 2015.
Music Mountain and its marvelous setting for both the musicians and the audience are justly famed. The centerpiece is Gordon Hall – one of the finest chamber music facilities in the country. With seating for 335 and legendary acoustics, Gordon Hall provides resonant and lovely sound, views of the gardens, grounds and hills from every seat or from the lawn, permitting listeners to savor music and nature as one.
Music Mountain is located in Falls Village, CT, in the northwestern corner of the state, approximately 100 miles or 2 1/2 hours from New York City (For GPS, please use 225 Music Mountain, Falls Village CT). The setting offers the serene beauty of the Litchfield Hills, at the foot of the Berkshires. The area is replete with antique shops, art galleries, historic homes, as well as plentiful opportunities for hiking and swimming.
The nearest airport is Bradley International Airport (Hartford), which is 50 miles or 1 hour 15 minutes from Music Mountain. The nearest stop by train is Wassaic on the Metro North Harlem Line, 20 miles or a half hour from the festival.
Between early June and late September there is a first-class 9-foot Steinway concert grand in Gordon Hall, a Steinway baby grand in Music Mountain House, and an upright Yamaha piano in both the Viola and Second Fiddle Houses.
Things to bring
August during the days in the Litchfield Hills is generally hot; the evenings are generally somewhat cooler. That having been said, you should prepare for a wide eventuality of weather, and bring a blanket. It can get buggy, as well: both insect repellant and an adequate supply of long-sleeved clothing and pants are highly recommended. Also, definitely bring at least one pair of closed-toe shoes. Linens, towels, blankets and pillows are provided.
